Microwave and health risks

Think of your day at office when you forgot your mobile at home? Annoyance is probably a discounted word. Ask a today’s woman if she can find her kitchen to be comfortable without an oven. She would certainly hate to be there.

Cell phone will celebrate its silver jubilee come 2009 and figures of 180 million US people embracing cell phone will only tell how people are enslaved to this small hand-held gadget. And, there are about 2 billion cell phones all over the world and these are constantly racing million minutes that eventually pump out low frequencies of radiation through the air.

And when it comes to microwave ovens, approximately every 9 homes in 10 in US and 10 restaurants among 10 depend on microwave ovens for preparing food. There is no debate to the convenience this gadget offers, leave the energy efficiency they give relative to the conventional ovens.

These two gadgets have changed lives of people profoundly. But did you know the lurking dangers these pose? Maybe the time has come for you to become informed of those dangers you were not told when you purchased your favorite Apple iPhone or your oven brand. Maybe you will not be willing to sacrifice your health in exchange of the conveniences these promise.

What is EMF?

EMF or electro-magnetic frequency is a measure of radiation that’s emitted from day-to-day devices including a computer, cell phone, a cordless phone, microwave oven, hairdryer, an automobile, and other similar electronic appliances. Cell phones emit the same form of radiation as microwave ovens, in just smaller dosages than the ovens.

While you are exposing your body to some amount of microwave when you operate an oven, the exposure to radiation is higher every time you use a cell phone, which is in the form of electromagnetic waves emitted by the atoms and molecules of a substance that results in ionization. For instance in a microwave oven the molecular architecture of the food that is kept for cooking is ionized or broken down by the process of ionization with the radiation.

Both wireless industry as well as home appliance industry claimed that the respective technology used in cell phones or ovens is indeed safe. But, have they conducted any safety studies before they went into mass scale production? Why would they?

What do you account for the increased incidence (by over 25%) of brain cancer in Americans ever since the advent of mobile phones? Are you convinced if the cell phone companies say it’s just a coincidence?

Ill effects of microwave radiation on human health

Medical researcher, Robert O. Becker, M.D, opines that the proliferation of electromagnetic fields is far higher than even the green house gases. Microwave radiation emitted by gadgets can heat up the human tissues that are more exposed; the head in case of cell phone and skin in case of ovens and the heat up may cause several short-term complications including headaches, fatigue, insomnia.

At the Bologna World Congress meeting held in June 1997, Faculty of Medicine from The University of Tokyo, presented a paper that studied the effects of melatonin production (a biomolecule which is an antioxidant and acts as shield in fighting with cancer cells) in those who used electric blankets. The results of their study are that: "night time exposure to microwaves of 50 Hz frequency generated by an electric blanket have resulted in suppression of melatonin production in 7 among 8 subjects tested.

An independent hypnotherapist in New Zealand comes with an interesting point that meditating twice daily for about half an hour could stimulate pineal gland to produce good quantities of melatonin. This needs clinical analysis though.

Several researchers concur that microwave radiation interferes with the DNA architecture and change the gene expression and make them as tumor promoters resulting in different types of cancers, brain and skin being the most common.

A study revealed that users of cell phones were at 2.5 times more risk for brain cancer, especially the side they hold the cell phone. And in those that use their phones for 60 minutes or more, the risk is 33% higher, because as more than 50% of the microwaves are absorbed and go heat the tissues of the head, some of the microwaves reaching almost brain. Surprisingly, FDA doesn’t authenticate these (and we people know for what obvious reasons).

A study by professor Henry Lai with his associate at the University of Washington, report that cells of the brain are damaged by exposure to microwaves (used lower levels than considered safe by guidelines of the US government). The study further notes that microwaves received even in minute quantities get accumulated and can result in repercussive effects.

Researchers at several places gave concurrent results of brain cell death and damage with exposure to microwave radiation emitted by cell phones. Most of them reported that damage to brain cells at young age could lead to early onset of Alzheimer's disease and memory loss problems.

If fertility is important for you (guess it is, unless you are a Chinese who do not want to conceive at all), then there are studies that report that carrying cell phone near groin could impair sperm count as well as sperm health. Furthermore, its been studied that microwaves also increase production of cellulite that increases signs of premature aging.

Microwave radiation in treatment modalities

Quite the contrary, there are treatments and therapy modalities using the microwaves, since the time electromagnetic radiation was discovered. There are surgeons who’ve been using microwave ablation catheters for noninvasive treatment of different conditions including very complicated heart surgeries to treat atrial fibrillation.

The use of microwaves in ophthalmic oral, gynecology and cosmetology has been there for long. The low-frequency AC ionized radiation is used for heating, excision, incision ablation as well as coagulation of target cells/tissues.

Whether we appreciate or not microwaves are proliferating everywhere through various gadgets we use. But using them judiciously is a wise way to improve our quality of living.

Some people offered tips to prevent excess exposure to microwaves include avoiding to standing near an oven while it is in operation. Erect negative ionizers within your premises where microwave-emitting gadgets like TV, cordless phone and computers are operated.
